A rainy week in Lenzerheide – and why we loved every minute of it

When you plan a summer holiday in the Swiss mountains, you probably imagine blue skies, alpine meadows in bloom, and long sunny days for hiking and swimming. Our week in Lenzerheide turned out a little differently - we might have chosen the rainiest week of the summer. But despite the drizzle, we still had an amazing family holiday in Lenzerheide, and here’s why.

Staying at the family-friendly Hotel Schweizerhof Lenzerheide

Our base for the week was Hotel Schweizerhof Lenzerheide, part of the Swiss Family Hotels network. This was not our first stay here, but it was our first full week - and even with bad weather, we never felt bored.

What makes this hotel special is the perfect balance between being family-friendly and maintaining a relaxing atmosphere for adults. It’s not one of those “all-in kids” hotels where everything is designed only for children - instead, it’s a place where both parents and little ones feel at home.

From day one, the staff made us feel welcome, relaxed, and looked after. The service is warm and professional, and the whole place has a “you’re on holiday but also at home” vibe.

What the hotel offers for families with kids

Hotel Schweizerhof Lenzerheide is full of thoughtful touches for families:

  • Breakfast with fresh, organic, and regional products – from fresh bread and local cheeses to healthy fruit.
  • Free kids’ menu for hotel guests – full board for kids means lunch and dinner at no extra cost.
  • Child-friendly amenities in rooms and restaurant – from bibs and children’s cutlery to changing mats, night lamps, and toys.
  • A welcome plush toy - every child gets a small stuffed animal to take home.
  • A fun kids’ quiz – includes sneaking into the kitchen to see the chefs at work and winning a prize at the end.

For active play and outdoor fun, the hotel also has:

  • An outdoor slide, trampoline, and small bike parkour - great for kids to burn off energy.
  • Kids bike rental with helmets – so families can explore the area safely.
  • Three adorable bunnies – children can help feed them every day or join in collecting wood and cork for their home.

There’s also:

  • A kids’ club that works like a small daycare where you can drop off your child.
  • A family pool with a warm children’s pool at 32°C.
  • Weekly activities such as pasta-making or glitter tattoos.
  • A cosy library with books and games, perfect for rainy days (Gaia’s favourite).

Things to do in Lenzerheide with kids

Even in bad weather, Lenzerheide is full of family-friendly activities:

  • Eichhörnliwald (Squirrel Forest) – a magical place where you can see and feed squirrels.
  • Playgrounds – we especially loved Eichhörnliwald Spielplatz and Kinderspielplatz & Sportplatz.
  • Lenzerheide lake – with a Badi for swimming on sunny days.
  • Globi meet & greet – Globi visits the lake every Wednesday, and meeting him was a big highlight for Gaia.

Family hikes in Lenzerheide

Even with rain, we managed two beautiful family hikes in Lenzerheide:

  • Autschliweg – a playful, interactive trail for children (info here).
  • Wetterwichtelweg Heidbüel – our favourite hike, with fun “Weather Gnome” stations (info here).

Next time, we plan to do the Globi Weg, but it requires a chairlift, and we weren’t sure how Gaia would react to it this year.

Celebrating Swiss National Day in Lenzerheide

We happened to be in Lenzerheide for the Swiss National Day celebrations on Aug 1st. The hotel gave us coupons for kids’ activities in the village: making a lantern, spinning the wheel of fortune, and enjoying free ice cream or cake. And of course — Globi showed up again, which made Gaia’s evening even more special.

What we packed for a rainy mountain holiday

Knowing the weather would be more autumn-like than summery, we packed:

Having the right clothing made it easy to enjoy the week no matter what the weather was doing.

Our holiday highlights in Lenzerheide

Even though the weather wasn’t perfect, our week in Lenzerheide was full of memorable moments. Here are our top highlights:

  • Best stay: Hotel Schweizerhof Lenzerheide
  • Favourite playgrounds: Eichhörnliwald Spielplatz and Kinderspielplatz & Sportplatz
  • Favourite hike: Wetterwichtelweg Heidbüel (next time: Globi Weg!)

Lenzerheide proved to us that you don’t need perfect sunshine to have a perfect family holiday. Between the warm hospitality of Hotel Schweizerhof, the endless kid-friendly activities, and the cosy atmosphere, we can’t wait to return — hopefully next time with a bit more sunshine.
