Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, wondering which path to take? Or sensed that gentle push to step outside your comfort zone? When was the last time a significant change motivated you to embrace a risk? And how frequently do you have the opportunity to reassess your career while feeling financially secure? This post will be about it all - new beginnings, taking risks and embracing the change.
Before I started my journey with Dear Gaia, I was working in HR department of one of the biggest Swiss banks. After returning from my maternity leave in March, I discovered that my role is not available, all because of the merger with another bank, I am sure many of you heard about. Did I feel disappointed or angry? Not at all—I anticipated this possibility, considering how many of work colleagues were or will be impacted by such a significant event. Was I saddened? Absolutely—this marked the end of a wonderful chapter in my life, and I had to accept that I would genuinely miss it.
The restructuring prompted me to reflect on my future career moves. Initially, I dove into applying for various positions, informing LinkedIn recruiters and headhunters of my availability. I even participated in a few interviews, which helped clarify what I want and what I wish to avoid. However, I realized that for all the roles I applied for or was approached about, if I were the hiring manager, I wouldn't choose to hire myself. I simply lacked sufficient motivation and clarity about my goals. I was merely browsing the options. 🙂
I knew I need to take a step back. This is what this phase is about, no? It should give you the opportunity to pause, think, try out new things, fail but also succeed.
Then, an idea sparked: *What if I did something completely different—something a little crazy—beyond the banking and HR world? What if I created something on my own, connecting my two lives in Switzerland and Poland, something meaningful and in line with my beliefs? The process has started.
As a mom, I was constantly searching for high-quality, sustainable clothing for my daughter. On the one hand I wanted safe, simple and timeless designs like the collection of bodysuits. On the other hand, was looking for unique accessories. I often found exactly what I was looking for in Poland, where good-quality, eco-friendly brands were more accessible. I soon noticed that friends here in Switzerland—and even strangers—were asking where I found such unique pieces for her.
Then I thought, what if I could bring these designs I know so well to Switzerland? Dear Gaia was born from this idea, and I set out to create a store that aligns fully with my values. No fast fashion—only trusted, certified materials, carefully chosen brands, and collaborations with people I enjoy working with. Sustainability is at the heart of it all, from avoiding air shipping to using reusable packaging and recycled print materials. With each step, Dear Gaia became more than just a store; it became a reflection of my beliefs and my journey toward mindful, lasting quality. It became a message I want to send to the planet and to my daughter Gaia 🙂
I have to to be very honest with you. From the initial seed planted in my head in June to the launch of the online store just last week, it has been quite a rollercoaster. I’ve gained invaluable experience along the way: drafting a business plan, (goodbye boring PowerPoint, say yes to Canva!), establishing my own brand, choosing the right producers to collaborate with, negotiating deals (and joyfully celebrating those first “yeses” 🎉), sourcing eco-friendly packaging, tackling courier issues, navigating the customs system, unpacking boxes, and building the online store entirely on my own. And now, here I am, launching the store, even if it feels just 85% ready, embracing the mantra: progress over perfection.
Was making that decision frightening? Yes, indeed. Do I still experience doubts? Without a doubt. Has it been daunting at times? Absolutely. But am I excited? Absolutely 100%! Each new challenge presents an opportunity to discover something surprising, and every small victory feels like a significant celebration. This journey has truly pushed me beyond my comfort zone in the most positive way, and I wouldn't exchange it for anything.
Here’s to embracing change, learning, and the endless possibilities that come with new beginnings. 🚀✨ Let me know in the comments below if you can relate to my story. Sharing your thoughts or experiences on taking risks and starting fresh can be so inspiring for everyone on a similar path!
