A family adventure at EBIANUM Baggermuseum: a must-visit for construction vehicle fans

Last winter, we were on the lookout for a family outing that would excite our little one and give us all a break from the usual routines. With a toddler who's obsessed with excavators and construction sites (and who could happily watch diggers for hours), the EBIANUM Baggermuseum in Fisibach quickly caught our eye. And what a gem it turned out to be! I’ve been meaning to share this discovery ever since because honestly—it was one of the best indoor family activities we’ve done, especially in the colder months.

Whether your child is deep in the "digger phase" or you're just looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination that’s equal parts fun and educational, EBIANUM is a fantastic place to explore. Located in the peaceful countryside of Canton Aargau, Fisibach is just a short drive from Zürich—and it offers something for everyone.

A journey through construction history

What makes EBIANUM special isn’t just the impressive machines—it’s the story behind them. The museum is a celebration of the Eberhard company’s legacy, which began over 60 years ago with two brothers, Heinrich and Rudolf, and a second-hand trax they bought with earnings from their wheat harvest. From those humble beginnings grew one of Switzerland’s most respected construction companies.

Opened in 2015, the museum now houses more than 40 historic machines and vehicles—some dating back to the 1920s—each with its own story. There are multilingual audio guides in English, German, and French, which walk you through the Eberhard family’s journey and how their work helped shape Zürich’s development, especially its airport and surrounding infrastructure.

A paradise for young construction fans

This is where EBIANUM really shines. Our child was in heaven—and honestly, we couldn’t blame her. The museum is filled with opportunities to touch, climb, dig, ride, and explore. There’s a massive indoor sandpit with kid-sized excavators, construction toys, and even mini dump trucks to load and unload. Outside (weather permitting from April to October), there’s another big sand area where kids can get their hands dirty, just like real construction workers.

We spent so much time in the play areas, especially with the pedal tractors, tricycles, and Bobby Cars zooming around. Our daughter tried to climb into every machine she saw—and there are many! From diggers to dozers and old trucks, the museum offers real-life machines that kids can sit in and pretend to drive.

Another big hit was the model collection upstairs. With over 3,000 miniature vehicles, cranes, and trucks, it was like a candy store for construction lovers. Even I found myself admiring the level of detail in some of them. There’s also a construction trailer filled with hands-on science experiments—ideal for curious older kids.

Family-friendly amenities

One thing that made the whole experience so smooth was how thoughtfully everything is set up for families. The “Baggerstube” cafeteria was a cozy place to warm up and recharge. Just be aware that  the menu isn’t extensive, so bring your own snacks if you have a picky eater.

Getting there was easy too—it’s about a 30-minute drive from Zürich. If you’re arriving by train, it’s a pleasant 10-minute walk from Kaiserstuhl station. There’s plenty of free parking onsite, and the whole museum is stroller-friendly, with modern, clean facilities.

What to wear for a visit

If you're wondering how to dress for a day at EBIANUM—especially with kids—comfort and practicality are key. The museum itself is indoors but in winter it can get quite chilly, so merino wool clothes and comfy sweatshirts and sweatpants will be ideal for exploring. However, if you're visiting between April and October, don’t forget to bring weather-appropriate clothes for the outdoor sandpit and play area. On warm days, kids might end up barefoot in the sand, so extra clothes, sun hats, and sunscreen come in handy.

Pro tip: Pack a small towel and wet wipes—your future self will thank you.
