Sun protection for babies: UPF clothing, hats, and shade - what actually works

Sun protection for babies: UPF clothing, hats, and shade - what actually works

Summer in Switzerland means long days outdoors - by the lake, in the garden, or hiking in the Alps. But a baby’s skin is up to five times thinner than an adult’s, and it doesn’t yet produce the melanin that helps protect against UV rays. That’s why, for children under one, dermatologists recommend that sun protection comes primarily from clothing and shade - not sunscreen.

Here’s what actually works, and how to build a sun-safe summer wardrobe without synthetic, chemical-laden fabrics.

Why clothing is your first line of defense

Sunscreen formulated for babies is fine for small exposed areas like hands and faces from around six months, but it shouldn’t be relied on for full-body protection. Tightly woven natural fabrics, organic cotton, linen, and muslin or merino wool,  block a significant amount of UV radiation simply through their weave, while staying breathable enough to prevent overheating.

A loose, long-sleeved top in lightweight cotton or linen, paired with light cotton trousers protects shoulders, arms, and legs during the hottest hours (typically 11am–3pm), while still letting skin breathe.

The wardrobe checklist

  • Lightweight t-shirts sleeves and trousers for midday sun, breathable enough for warm Swiss afternoons (our muslin sets are designed exactly for this).
  • Organic cotton bodysuits and rompers are perfect for newborns, even on the hottest summer days. Soft, breathable, and gentle on delicate skin, they help keep your baby comfortable while providing just the right amount of coverage. Remember, your little one is used to the warmth of the womb, where temperatures were around 36.6°C.
  • A wide-brim hat or sun hat that shades the face, ears, and back of the neck — far more effective than a baseball cap.
  • Light, natural-fiber socks to protect little feet in sandals — check out our organic socks and tights.
  • Shade, always — a stroller canopy, umbrella, or simply timing outdoor play for early morning and early evening.

Why fabric choice matters

Synthetic sun-protective clothing often relies on chemical UV-treatments and tightly woven polyester, which can trap heat and irritate sensitive skin. At Dear Gaia, we choose GOTS-certified organic cotton, linen, muslin and merino wool — naturally breathable fibers that move heat and moisture away from the body, reducing the risk of heat rash while still offering a physical barrier against the sun.

A simple summer routine

  • Dress in light, loose layers of natural fabric during peak sun hours.
Add a hat or turban whenever your baby is outdoors, even in the shade (reflected UV is real).
  • Keep a muslin cloth or light blanket on hand — perfect as an extra layer of shade over a stroller.
  • Save sunscreen for small exposed areas, and reapply after water play.
  • Plan outdoor adventures for the morning or late afternoon when the sun is gentler.

Sun-safe doesn’t have to mean synthetic. With the right natural fabrics and a little shade, your little one can enjoy every minute of a Swiss summer — comfortably and safely.
